Shadowbox Cellars was founded in 2009 by a collaborative effort of Monty and Sara Preiser and Ira and Eydie Holz. Monty and Sara are known throughout Napa Valley as the preeminent wine and restaurant writers through their “Preiser Key to Napa” publication.
Having garnered invaluable knowledge on the nuances of creating fine wine it was only natural that they would embark on the next step into producing quality wines of their own, under the Shadowbox Cellars banner!
We entered their well located, intimate tasting room through the “red door” on 1st street in downtown Napa. We were met by Winemaker and Director of Operations Justin Preiser who told us the story of the winery and tasted us through five great varietals.
We started with the 2106 Rose of Pinot Noir, their 2nd release of Rose sourced from a single vineyard bordering the Carneros region. This is a great wine for a warm Florida afternoon or evening!
We next sampled another quality wine, the complex 2013 Orchard Vineyard Chardonnay sourced from the Oak Knoll District. Next was the 2013 Pinot Noir from the low yielding Anne Katherine Vineyard in the Carneros District of Sonoma, which we found to be very smooth and pleasing to taste. An unusual but outstanding blend of Zinfandel and Petite Syrah, the 2015 Outline Red Blend was our next adventure. We found this to be exceptional and at a great consumer price point. We liked this so much that we ordered a few cases to be shipped home!
The final offering was the 2012 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced primarily from the Stags leap District with a small amount from Rutherford to incorporate the splendor of Rutherford Dust tannin. This was the perfect wine to end our Shadowbox Cellars tasting, an elegant Cab that holds up well against any produced in the valley.
A point of pride for Shadowbox Cellars is that their wines are a small lot, from some of California’s best vineyards, and they age the Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet, 3-4 years before release for maximum flavor and balance. The red blend and Rose are released in the usual fashion and their Rose is direct press meaning its not the run-off juice from another crushing, but the best first-run juice.
When in Napa do not miss a visit to the Shadowbox Cellars Tasting Room, open Thursday through Sunday from 1 to 7 and Monday and Tuesday by appointment.
