Geneva on the Lake is located on Seneca Lake in the heart of the Finger Lakes Wine Country. Upon checking in we found ourselves chatting with General Manager, Bill Schickel and it was easy to see why this resort has earned the coveted AAA Four-Diamond Award for 28 years.
The love and devotion that Bill and the staff share for this property and their guests is truly the heart of what makes Geneva on the Lake so magical and a big part of why visitors from around the world return year after year. Geneva on the Lake was built in 1914 as a private home and was modeled after Villa Lancellotti in Frascati, Italy, with its Italian marble fireplaces, wall tapestries, Ionic columns and wood-coffered ceilings. The villa later became a monastery, and in 1981, an elegant small resort was established by Norbert H. Schickel, Jr. who is quoted as saying, “Geneva on the Lake is an oasis, a little island of beauty, peace, and friendliness in a busy world.” The Audi family purchased the resort in 1995 and the property is still overseen by Bill Schickel and his staff who strive for perfection in all that they do. Described by “American Historic Inns” as “One of the 10 most romantic inns in the United States”, Geneva on the Lake offers 23 Suites and 6 Studios; all are air-conditioned and superbly decorated with Stickley furniture. The exceptional beauty of the villa and lakeside setting is enhanced by the magnificent 70’ outdoor pool and the gorgeous formal gardens that are meticulously tended to daily. Everything about this resort speaks to the serene surroundings and the stunning view of Seneca Lake. A highlight of any visit to Geneva on the Lake is the dining experiences that are offered. Picture this…an intimate dinner by candlelight in the exquisite Lancellotti Dining Room with harp music playing softly in the background. The resort’s outstanding chefs, Lead Chef Carl Bray, and Chef Michael Gaudeio are well known for their gourmet cuisine that is masterfully prepared and presented.
Our meal was perfection and started with freshly baked olive bread which we could have easily eaten an entire basket of and been perfectly happy. Fortunately, we controlled ourselves and left room for the decadent, roasted carrot with rosemary and sautéed fennel soup that was finished with crème fraiche. That was followed by grilled, marinated Atlantic Salmon topped with Pineapple-Orange Salsa and the Filet Mignon Marchands de Vin, aged Angus filet grilled and finished with a reduction of Arthur Hill Black Raspberry Preserve and Wagner Winery Cab Franc. For dessert we really lost control…the Baked Alaska was a true work of culinary art. We paired all of the courses with premium Finger Lakes wines from the extensive wine list. We will always savor the memories of this magical dining experience.
